The Gift of Reflection: Navigating holiday traditions and making room for new memories

Dec 01, 2023

Can you believe it’s already December? The holiday lights are twinkling, the smell of gingerbread is in the air and everyone’s favourite seasonal movies are back on repeat (Love Actually βœ‹over here). But amidst the festivities, have you ever stopped to reflect on your holiday traditions and what hey mean to you and your family?

The Essence of Traditions

Traditions can be the cosy, comforting blanket of the holiday season. Whether it’s baking grandma’s famous cookies, or watching the same heart-warming film as a family, traditions often bring a sense of familiarity and belonging.

But here’s the thing: It’s okay to reflect on these customs and consider whether they genuinely bring you joy or just add more to your already packed to do list.

Navigating Change and Making New Traditions

Family dynamics shift. Kids grow up. Even our own views on what’s essential can change. Perhaps you’re a new parent navigating your first holiday season or perhaps this year has brought some changes that make it impossible to keep up with old traditions. Remember, new experiences can be just as meaningful as the old ones, sometimes even more so.

Ideas for New Traditions

  • The Gratitude Jar: Throughout December, have everyone write something they’re thankful for and put it in a jar. Open and read them together on New Year’s Eve.
  • Random Acts of Kindness: Make it a family goal to do small, anonymous favours for neighbours or friends.
  • Mindfulness Mornings: Spend the first few minutes of each day in December practicing gratitude or mindfulness as a family.

Balancing the Old and the New

The holidays offer a beautiful opportunity for reflection, giving us a chance to pause and evaluate what really matters. You don’t have to let go of every old tradition, but you also shouldn’t feel obligated to keep them all. The key is to find a balance that honours your family’s past, present and future.

Your Reflection Corner

What is your favourite holiday tradition, and what makes it special for you and your family?

What’s one new tradition you’d like to start? How does it align with your family’s values?

So as the year winds down, take this time to be truly present with your family, cherish the traditions that bring you joy, and be open to creating new memories.
